Nematodes against thrips
Thrips are tiny, slender insects about 1-3 millimetres in size. They have elongated bodies, often yellowish to dark brown in colour. After hatching from the egg, they go through two larval and pupal stages before they emerge as adult, flying insects and cause great damage to plants through their sucking activity. The larvae and pupae of thrips can be effectively controlled with nematodes of the species Steinernema feltiae.
Product recommendation against thrips: nemaplus®
nemaplus® contains nematodes of the species Steinernema feltiae for effective and biological control of thrips in houseplants, cannabis and herbs.
How can I recognise a thrips infestation?
Thrips can cause considerable damage to plants. The species Frankliniella occidentalis and Thrips tabaci are particularly widespread pests. Thrips feed on plant sap, which they suck from the leaves. Due to their small size, thrips are often difficult to recognise. Both the adults and the small white larvae are mainly found on the underside of the leaves. Typical damage caused by thrips can be recognised by the fact that the leaves of the plant turn a silvery colour in the infested areas. You can also recognise a thrips infestation by the many brown droppings on the underside of the leaves. If the infestation is severe, it can lead to the plant dying due to an undersupply of nutrients.
How can I control thrips with nematodes?
Thrips can be controlled very well with nematodes, but you have to catch the thrips at the right stage of development. Thrips are active from spring to autumn. At 20°C, a new generation develops within 3 weeks. The larva hatches from the egg on the surface of the soil. After the first and second larval stages, a prepupa has developed. These migrate into the soil where the development to pupa continues. Nematodes are only effective against the prepupa and pupa in the soil. We therefore recommend repeating the treatment every week.
Dosage recommendations for the nematodes can be found on the nemaplus product page.
Which plants are attacked by thrips?
Thrips infest a wide range of ornamental and crop plants. Plants that are particularly at risk include roses, orchids, chrysanthemums and gerberas. However, green houseplants such as Monstera deliciosa or Pilea Peperomioides are also on the thrips' menu. Thrips are also often found on many crops such as cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, strawberries and cannabis. Thrips feel particularly at home in warm and dry conditions, which is why they are often found in greenhouses.
Safe and effective
Nematodes are the natural solution against thrips. The small nematodes combat the larvae and puppae completely biologically and effectively. No chemicals, no side effects.
