Fungus gnats are among the most common pests in houseplants, herbs and seedling soil. The small black flies are a nuisance, but the real damage is caused by their larvae in the soil. They feed on fine roots and can considerably weaken young plants in particular.

SF nematodes (Steinernema feltiae) control fungus gnat larvae in a targeted, sustainable and completely biological way. These beneficial organisms actively seek out the larvae in the soil and stop the infestation right at its source. The treatment is suitable for houseplants, herbs, greenhouses and seedlings and can be carried out all year round at soil temperatures from 8 °C.

How do nematodes work against fungus gnats?

SF nematodes (Steinernema feltiae) are microscopically small roundworms that occur naturally in the soil. Once applied with the watering water, they move actively through the substrate and search specifically for fungus gnat larvae. As soon as they have found a larva, they penetrate it and end its development within a few days.

The nematodes then multiply inside the larva and go on to seek out further pests. This reduces the infestation sustainably and interrupts the life cycle of the fungus gnats.

As only the larvae are controlled, the number of adult fungus gnats decreases noticeably over time.

Using nematodes against fungus gnats

Stir the nematodes into water according to the instructions on the pack.
Pour the solution evenly onto the infested soil.
Keep the substrate evenly moist for the following 14 days.
For best results, we recommend a second treatment after about 14 days.

Tip: As adult fungus gnats can continue to lay eggs during the treatment, a repeat application ensures particularly reliable control.

Where do fungus gnats come from?

Fungus gnats often enter the home with new houseplants or potting soil. Moist soil in particular offers ideal conditions for laying eggs. A single female can lay up to 200 eggs in the substrate. New fungus gnats hatch after just a few weeks and the infestation grows quickly.

While the adult black flies are mainly a nuisance, it is the larvae that cause the actual damage. They feed on organic material and fine plant roots. Seedlings, cuttings and young plants are particularly sensitive to a heavy infestation.
