Nematodes against black vine weevil
The black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) is a common pest of more than 100 plant species such as yew, rhododendron, cherry laurel and privet, as well as strawberries and roses. The beetles feed on the leaves of the plants and leave behind the characteristic cove feeding. However, the damage caused by the larvae, which feed on the roots of the plants, is much more serious. Both larvae and adult beetles can be effectively controlled with nematodes.
Our recommendation against weevil larvae:
nematop®
nematop® contains nematodes of the species Heterorhabditis bacteriophora for effective and biological control of weevil larvae.
Damage caused by the black vine weevil and its larvae
Many garden owners will be familiar with it: cove-like feeding edges on the leaves of plants. This is a typical sign of a weevil-infestation. This feeding damage is caused by the nocturnal beetles. However, the real danger lurks in the soil. The weevil larvae prefer to feed on the plant roots. This prevents the plants from absorbing nutrients and, in the worst case, can lead to the death of the plants. One sign of a nutrient deficiency is the yellowing or wilting of the leaves.
Control black vine weevil with nematodes
The larvae of the weevil can be effectively controlled with nematodes. Nematodes are small, approx. 0.5 mm large threadworms. The species Heterorhabditis bacteriophora specialises in controlling weevil larvae. The use of nematodes is very simple. They are supplied in a clay mineral powder and mixed with water according to the detailed instructions on the inside of the packet. The nematode solution is then simply poured onto the soil of the affected plants. We recommend the product nematop® to control the larvae. Adult weevils can be successfully and easily controlled with our weevil-stop nematode trap.
Our recommendation against the adult beetles:
nematop® Käfer-Stopp
nematop® Weevil-Stop is a wooden trap filled with a nematode-gel for the biological control of adult weevils.
When can I control the black vine weevil?
In spring, overwintering larvae, pupae and young beetles can be controlled with nematodes, in autumn the newly hatched larvae. The beetle itself can be controlled with the weevil-stop trap.
Product | Application time | Effective against |
nematop® | April/May and August/September | Larvae |
Käfer-Stopp | May until September | Beetle |
nemamax® | February-April and September-November | Larvae |

Safe and effective
