nema-care® Raupenfrei

Beneficial nematodes for effective control of box tree moths in the garden.

Recommended application period: April - October

Box tree moth in the garden

The box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis) can be a real challenge for garden enthusiasts. This invasive pest species has infested numerous box trees in gardens around the world in recent years. The box tree moth is active from the beginning of April to October. From 7 °C, the caterpillars emerge from their cocoons and begin to feed, which can lead to the box trees being completely eaten bare. Box tree moth caterpillars are active during the day and have a bright green base colour with dark spots and longitudinal stripes.

Control box tree moths with nematodes

Nematodes can be used as soon as the caterpillars are discovered. They are effective against both small and larger caterpillars. Ideally, treat several times at intervals of 3-7 days. The nematodes are stored in a carrier material, which is mixed with water and the enclosed wetting agent according to the instructions on the inside of the packaging and sprayed into the box trees. The caterpillars and webs must be fully hit so that the nematodes can take effect. Ideally in the evening or after rain so that the nematodes remain moist for a long time. Commercially available backpack sprayers are suitable, e.g. Gloria Prima 5. The nemasprayer is not suitable.

Frequently asked questions

Are nematodes dangerous for my pets?
No, nematodes are completely harmless to humans and animals. They die at temperatures above 32° C and are therefore unable to survive in the bodies of humans and mammals.

How many nematodes do I need against box tree moths?
10 million nematodes are sufficient to treat 3 large (>50 cm Ø) or up to 10 small box trees. One pack of nema-care caterpillar-free contains 2 x 10 million nematodes.
Product information "nema-care® Raupenfrei"
Contents
nema-care® Raupenfrei contains 2 x 10 million nematodes of the genus Steinernema and 2 x 10 ml wetting agent. Always mix and apply together to ensure good penetration of the caterpillar web. One 10 million pack is sufficient for 3 large or 10 small Buxus bushes

Storage
Store nema-care® caterpillar-free in the refrigerator at 4-8°C. The nematodes are effective until at least the date printed on the pack. The sooner they are applied, the better.

Dosage
1 packet (10 million) is mixed in 5 litres of water and a packet of wetting agent is added.

Application
The treatment is applied as soon as the first box tree moth caterpillars are observed. Repeat the application at intervals of 3-7 days to catch any caterpillars that hatch later. If possible, spray in the evening from 19:00. This minimises the risk of the nematodes drying out. It must not rain heavily for 2 hours after spraying. However, high humidity or drizzle is an advantage. The temperature must be at least 12°C during application and for two hours afterwards.

Shelf life
If stored refrigerated between 2° C and 8° C, the unopened pack will keep for 6 weeks.
