Beneficial nematodes against grubs

The larvae of leaf beetles are known as grubs. These include, among others, the June beetle, cockchafer, welsh chafer and garden chafer. Grubs can cause major damage to vegetable patches or lawns through their massive feeding on plant roots. Nematodes of the species Heterorhabditis bacteriophora are the natural enemies of white grubs and can be used for their biological control. The nematodes search for the grubs in the soil, penetrate them and kill them. Inside the dead grubs, the nematodes multiply and go in search of other pests. As the different types of grubs are susceptible to nematodes at different times, it is essential to know which type of grub you are dealing with. If you are not sure which species you are dealing with, you can use our free and non-binding identification service.

Application of nema-green®

The nematodes are most effective when they reach the grubs in their most susceptible phases of the development cycle. The nematodes are simply mixed with water according to the instructions on the inside of the packaging and applied to the affected areas using a watering can or Nema sprayer. Nematodes require moisture and are sensitive to UV radiation, which is why we recommend application in overcast and humid weather conditions. If the soil is dry, we recommend pre-watering to allow the nematodes to penetrate the soil as effectively as possible.

Recommended application times:

  • Garden chafer: Mid July (6-8 weeks after beetle flight) until end of September
  • June beetle: Mid August (6-8 weeks after beetle flight) until mid September
  • Welsh chafer: April until beginning of May, as soon as soil temperature reaches 12°C

Frequently asked questions

What are nematodes?

Nematodes are small threadworms with a length of approx. 0.5 millimetres. Some nematode species are entomopathogenic, which means that they can parasitise and kill insects. Nematode genera with these properties include Steinernema and Heterohabditis, which we use in our products

When can I control white grubs with nematodes?

Nematodes are an effective means of biological control of white grubs. In order to achieve the best possible effect, it is important to know what type of grub you are dealing with and to use the nematodes according to the respective life cycle.

  • Cockchafer grubs: April/May and August/September
  • June beetle grubs: August/September
  • Welsh chafer grubs: April
  • Garden chafer grubs: July/September
